Initial Accredited Asbestos and Lead Classes:
- For worker level, ability to communicate in the language of the class. Literacy is NOT a requirement at the worker level. Classes may be approved for any language. META is currently approved for English and Spanish. For all other classes, literacy in English is a prerequisite.
- There are no federal education or experience requirements for any asbestos or lead classes. Call META if you have questions about a particular state’s licensing requirements.
- Some state licensing programs require the accredited individual to work for a licensed firm, or become a licensed business entity.
Refresher Classes
- Asbestos refreshers must be taken within two years of the last training date. Otherwise the initial training must be retaken. In Indiana, the time period is 18 months. The accreditation expires after one year, so to retain the ability to perform regulated work refresher training must be taken within a year.
- Lead Based Paint (LBP) refreshers must be taken within one, two, or three years of the last training date. There is typically no grace period if licensing is desired. Otherwise the initial training must be retaken.
- Most OSHA training, such as Hazwoper, OSHA lead, and asbestos awareness, has an annual training component but schedules are not as exacting as the accredited training. There is no language or literacy requirement, though the nature of OSHA’s performance based training would make compliance difficult in many instances for some levels of training if the trainee is illiterate.
- For asbestos and lead worker level, ability to communicate in the language of the class. Literacy is NOT a requirement at the worker level. Classes may be approved for any language. META is currently approved for English, Spanish, and Polish. For all other asbestos and lead accredited classes, literacy in English is a prerequisite.
